Why I make a teachers New Years resolutions too
I must admit, I am not really into the whole New Years resolution thing. I find that people often say it, start well and quit quickly. However, I have made an effort the last 3 years to set one long term teaching goal and break it into achievable steps. And it is working. Last year, my goal was to get better at using Google Docs for data. I started small with tracking work samples, then assigning marks and pretty soon I was adding comments. Having that long term goal in mind, kept me moving in a forward direction. It also made my annual reviews much easier. As I sit here now, I also get that great feeling. A feeling that is free and doesn't need anyone else to fuel it. It is a sense of achievement. A sense of pride that I stuck to my goal.
So as I sit here pondering on how I can move forward again for the new year, I was thinking that I need to step out of my comfort zone and start letting others give me feedback and be more active in seeking it. I want feedback more regularly from others in order to improve my teaching. I can start by asking people in my unit, can I do anything better or do they have suggestions to add. Hopefully this will be something that I can do to keep improving and moving in the right direction. After all, I seriously do not want to end up a stubborn teacher who knows my way is right. I don't want to close myself off and think that I know everything. Why? Because I still love to learn even as a teacher. I can't imagine myself ever being THAT cranky old teacher.
So whether you just make a small New Years goal or a large one, make sure that you aim for something. After all, teachers need to practise what we preach. We always talk to kids about setting goals, getting feedback and moving forward. Aiming high and starting fresh each year is vital. The start of the year is a good a time as any to refresh, move forward and build momentum. What will your New Years teaching resolution be?
