1. What is the purpose of gathering and analysing this data? I try to focus on why I need, what I need it for and how will I use it. There is no point collecting data that sits unused and pulled out once a term. I need data that is relevant, connected and essential to move students learning forward
2. Is the data really targeting thinking, misconceptions or it is just knowledge focussed? Do not get me wrong. There is certainly a place for assessing knowledge. However, that is not all that we can assess. Skills, conceptual understanding, thinking and reasoning are just as important
3. Is this data being collected for a score or a third party? If it is for a score on a spreadsheet then that is all the time that I will give it.
4. Is my focus on analysing and applying the results of the data to enhance student learning? I have started to put some data tools to the side in favour of using data that I can directly apply the results of to enhance students learning. Observations, surveys, quick thumbs up scores, conversations, goals
So as a result, I am not data conscious. I am now more cautious of my data collecting tools. I have shifted the focus to interpreting and applying the results to directly impact student learning.
